With so many email programs running on your pc with diverse settings, you might face problems with your existing email account. If you face difficulties in sending emails from your account, you must first ensure that your email client is adequately configured. Here are the SMTP SSL and Non SSL settings, you need to use one of them:

Port 25 blocking

If you are unable to send mail, it might be due to a restraint by your ISP (Internet Service Provider) as most of ISPs obstruct the normal sendmail port 25 owing to certain security issues. This can occur even when sending seems to work fine as some ISP’s execute these changes without issuing any warning.

Checking if Port 25 is blocked

An average user may find it an easy option to get in touch with their ISP in order to find out whether port 25 is being blocked. However, an advanced user can follow the directions below to test port 25 blocking with the help of the command line:

If you want to test whether port 25 is blocked, you first need to open your command line on your computer. A windows user can access the command line by clicking start > run > cmd while Mac users can use the “Terminal” application. On the command line, you need to enter: (Note! You must ensure that you swap your-domain.com with your actual domain name)

telnet your-domain.com 25

Note: Telnet is disabled on latest versions of MS Windows. If you get a notification, “Windows cannot find ‘telnet'”, you may be required to enable telnet first.

In case you fail to get any response or receive a failure message, it might be due to port 25 blocking. However, it will not be port 25 blocking if you get a message similar to the one below:

220 servername. ezwebhosting.com220 We do not authorize the use of this system to transport unsolicited, 220 and/or bulk email

How to fix Port 25 blocking

If your ISP blocks port 25, here are three ways, using any one of which you can resolve the issue:

The Preferred Solution

If your ISP is blocking port 25, you should first try to use the outgoing mail server provided by your ISP. Since each ISP features different settings (for example, username and password, smtp server…), you will be required to get in touch with your ISP to obtain the right settings. Here are some alternate solutions, which require you to check port 465 or 587 as opposed to 25, but in case your ISP starts blocking 465 or 587 in the future, you will again face the difficulties in sending email.

Alternative Solution #1

Starting from late March 2010, we are in the process of updating most of our servers to run SMTP more than port 587 and port 25. If your ISP blocks port 25, you just need to change your SMTP port number to 587. You can find this setting in the advanced settings of your email client.

Alternative Solution #2

The second alternative solution is to use the secure, or SSL, port for outgoing mail. This requires you to select the setting “this server requires a secure connection (SSL)” in your mail program. This change must be made only for the outgoing mail server. After checking that box, you need to change the port listing from 25 to 465 and then save these changes. You can find these settings in the advanced settings of your email client.

You may also want to change the outgoing server name to secure##. ezwebhosting.com, secure## being the secure option of the actual server. Here is an example, if your Welcome Email specifies that your account is on biz54.ezwebhosting.com, your outgoing server name should be secure54.ezwebhosting.com.com.

If you are still doubtful, get in touch with our tech support team.
